News from the Convention..

Karen is sending news from the Sewing Machine Dealers Convention.. and we are letting you all know what is happening.

3 presser feet New to Brother, have been announced.

The first is a new "stitch in the ditch" foot. That has a deeper center blade.

The second is a new "cording and piping foot".

The third is a "Roller Foot"

The Roller Sewing Machine Presser Foot is effective for preventing fabric from slipping or puckering, because the presser foot rotates to feed the upper layer together with the lower layer without slippage, so the upper layer and lower layer are fed simultaneously.

Also... Working in cooperation with Eileen Roche Brother will be introducing a Magnetic Hoop for the Quattro series and the Duetta Series.

If you are not familiar with the Snap Hoop Product.. We have found an old video that will give you the premise of this product.

Last Year in August.. we introduced you to the Brother TV Web Site.. The TV Program is run on Public Television Stations across the country. The show was not picked up by the St Louis Station Nine. But it is possible if enough people contact the station and ask that "It's Sew Easy" be added to our NINE programming the persons in charge could be swayed to consider this program to air in St Louis.

2012 St Louis Quilt Shop Hop Details

Heyde has joined the annual St Louis Metro Shop Hop.. There are 12 wonderful quilt shops located on both the Missouri and Illinois side of the Mississippi who will welcome your visit to their shop during this event.

Mark your calendars for the Shop Hop Dates.. March 29th, 30th, 31st and April 1st. All store hours for this week-end

Thursday and Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm
Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm
Sunday 12:00pm to 4:00pm

This years theme is Meet Me in St Louis. A feature of the hop is an exclusive Hoffman Batik designed with St Louis motifs. This fabric will be available at all of the "hop" shops participating.

Sewing Project for Tuesday

Today's sewing project is quick and so easy. Some may think that it is a bit crafty, and well it might be. However the technique and result can be use for applique projects, quilt labels and more.

So let's begin.. To Create A Piece of Notebook Paper..

First our supplies:

White Cotton Fabric, we use a scrap 8"x6" of good muslin.(Southern Bell)
A same size piece of White and Warm batting.
Rayon Thread in Aqua, Rose Pink and Black
1 5" square colored charm fabric.
5 inch square of fuse-ing web
pinking sheers.
Sewing machine.. for straight stitch and built in font.

Press the muslin and the batting. Then layer the muslin atop the batting.
Take it to your sewing machine and using the default straight stitch and aqua blue thread in the needle begin stitching rows from left to right.

We used the presser foot to gauge the width of our rows. After completing each row, cut the thread and go back to the left side and complete another row. you can make as many rows as you want... but for our purposes we are only making 10 to create our "Friends Magnet".

After completing the rows, we thread the machine with rose pink and using the triple stretch stitch, created the column. This was placed on the left side of the page.. just like a piece of notebook paper.

Now.. depending on your model of Brother, choose a font stitch.

Fill in on the screen the words you want to sew. We choose "Sew glad we're friends" sewing "Sew glad"... first. Then dropped down a line and programmed the words "we're friends" and sewed.

To finish your Note Paper... for this project:

Fuse webbing to the back of the charm square.
Then fuse the charm square to the back of your notepaper.
Then you can sew around the edges of your paper.. or do as we did and just pinked the edges..
We glued a magnet on the back.. and your done.

Now can you imagine the possibilities? Notepaper is everywhere, and the perfect canvas for drawing, note taking, etc. So what fun you can have duplicating notepaper with your sewing machine quick and easy..

This would be a great quilt label background..
How about the fabric postcards..
Create a message on notepaper and applique on a quilt.
Create a piece of notebook paper to be a piece of fabric for a phone caddy, laptop cover, covers for all sorts of techie toys.

The Weeks Sewing Tip and New Fabric..

Today's Sewing Machine "How To" is from Jayme.

We are going to make decorative BRAID with our sewing machine.

This type of braid can be created directly on the project.. or the decorative braid can be created on wash away stabilizer. When you create on wash away stabilizer you can use the resulting braid for bracelets, necklaces, cord for hang tags, etc.
The following video will give you the basics.. Let's begin: Click the Arrow in the box below.

OK now for additional details. You can use many trims to create braid.

Cord or heavy thread..
Silk Ribbons
Satin covered piping
Ribbon with a cord trim..
The sky is the limit.. try with the trims you have and see what happens.

Materials to create braid on..

You can create your braid right on your finished project.
You can create your braid on water soluble stabilizer and then wash away the backing.

Settings..

With Ribbons or flat trim.. you do not need to tie the knot.
The zig-zag stitch width is according to the size of your trims.
The straight stitch length to form your braid should be increased based on the size of your trims. up to 5.0

It's PE Design Software Class Day..

Susan is an expert at PE Design.. and leads this class in the morning at 10:00am. If you have any questions or need some problem solving with your work in PE design.. bring them in. Susan addresses each issue while the class follows along. Bring in your lap top loaded with your copy of PE design to work on in class. You can also follow along viewing the big screen and take notes.

Quilt Book Review.. and Chatter

It's Brother Club Day at Heyde. Today's Club will be led by Laura. So bring your notebooks and "show and tell". One of the topics covered in class today is NEEDLES. What sizes to use for which project in your machine. You will also get a take home booklet for reference on the subject. Morning session is 10:00am and Evening session is 5:15pm.

It's Thursday.. so we are also doing our Quilting Book Review.
Today it is Color Shuffle by Karla Alexander that captured our attention. It follows a unique set of directions for a quilts color layout and assembly This is not a new book. It was released in 2009.

This is not Karla's first... but like her earlier books it features scraps.
What does one do with all the scraps? This topic is of great interest to fast and furious quilters. When you have a lot of scraps you eventually want to creatively know what to do with them.

Unlike some scrappy quilting projects.. the 16 quilts in this book for the most part use larger scraps.. and you won't find many "half square triangles" or "flying geese". It's is more like high end color blocking.

It begins with the usual eight pages of basic quilting techniques. Karla explains how to blend her stacking and shuffling methods with more new techniques. Some of her earlier books.. were titled "Stack the Deck" and "Stack The Deck Revisited"
Throughout the book, there are tips given and set off in colored boxes. Each project shows a full color page of the finished quilt and also tells the finished quilt and block size.
Each of the 16 quilt patterns have a cutting list and lots of graphics for following the written instructions. As with most quilting books, the instructions for quilting are listed "as desired". Templates are included and are full sized so no copying needed.
This book will interest you..

Sewing Project Day.. Heart Mug Rug

We are one week from Valentine's Day 2012. The holiday is not just for sweethearts anymore, it is also a great opportunity to share a special something with a friend. A heart themed gift always says thanks for being in my life.

Today our sewing project is Quick and Scrappy..but so cute and useful.
It's A Heart Mug Rug.. We will show you how to make 2 of these.. in just 30 minutes or less.

You will need..

4 --- 5 inch pieces of fabric. We chose black and white.
2- 5 inch pieces of warm and natural
4 5 inch pieces of fuseable web
1 - 5 inch piece of RED Felt.
red and black thread to match the fabric.
satin cord trim.. (check out your stash trim box)
5 inch square of paper to cut out your heart pattern.

The first step is to make a sandwich.. Apply the fuseable web to both sides of the Warm and Natural. Peel off the paper from the fuseable and heat fuse the cotton fabric to each side of the warm and natural. The sandwich is finished..

Using a Zig zag Stitch.. the setting we like is 4.5 x 0.9 attach the satin cord as a binding around each of the "sandwiches"

Note: we love this technique.. and the more we do it on the edges of projects the more we change it up to suit the project. This is a Carol Ann Wah technique and if you would like to know more about this process.. Check out her Video Here

Welcome back.. cool video right ? I bet you can visualize all sorts of projects that this could be the finishing touch...

Now it's time to cut out your heart pattern.. You remember how to do this, right? Think back to kindergarten.. Fold your 5 inch square of paper in half and cut a 1/2 heart shape. Pin the paper heart half to the 5 inch square of red felt. Commercial HERE: Heyde has some of the best Felt.. 20 % wool 80 % rayon on the fabric clearance table. It's still on sale.. in Black, Red and Gold. This grade of felt is perfect for sewing projects.. Add some to your stash while it's on sale. The heart object and the resulting heart space. Place them on top of the bound fabric sandwiches...

Sew in black thread around the heart.. Straight stitch at a 4.0 length. On the heart space sew around the heart opening and the edges.. It is important to have matching thread in the bobbin for this step.. as it shows on the back.

Your Done.. As fast as these go.. you could have a hand full of mug rugs to share with friends on Valentine's Day or even a couple of days before.. It's never to early to start celebrating the 0X0X0X (hugs and kisses) holiday..

Brother Sewing Machine Tip: Memory Banks?

Welcome to Sewing Tips and Hints. Our plan is to bring you a blog post each week that is focused on a machine "did you know" or sewing technique.

Our First topic is the Memory Banks in your Brother Computerized Sewing Machines.. Our Dixie Boatman.. recently shared this bit of knowledge about the Brother Stitch Memory Banks..

Machines that have the memory feature.. are "all Quattros" The 4000 - 5000 series.. and the 2000 series.

Why should you use the machines memory to save your stitches? Well, a good example might be the different sizes of "blanket stitch" used in applique. You have the default size and then usually depending on the size of the pieces you are appliqueing.. you need to adjust the stitch. Rather than make a note on paper of your size changes... YOUR BROTHER WILL KEEP TRACK FOR YOU UNTIL YOUR PROJECT IS DONE.

Let's see how this works:

We are using the Innovis 5000 to show this feature. This screen is your stitch selection.. and we are pointing out the area where you can make the adjustments to the default size of the stitch. Once you have sized the stitch as you like..

Press the Memory Button.. You have now stored your new stitch size in one of the 5 memory banks for that utility stitch.

As you work on your project over time.. you can be assured that you have the correct sized stitch for your project. You will simply go to the stitch of choice.. for us that is the blanket stitch shown here. Then select the Retrieve

button.

Your Memory Bank Screen pops up and you can choose your "Saved Stitch".

And you are ready to sew. You may also delete your saved stitches at any time.. making the memory bank ready for a new project that may require different sizes.

This feature is such a blessing for the sewists who are working on a complex art quilt, features of thread painting.. or an in depth applique project that requires different sizes of the same stitch.

Check out your Brother Machine.. and try the utility stitch memory banks. The screen may look a bit different, but the words are the same.. MEMORY and RETRIEVE.

Wow where did the week GO ? There was a lot happening at the store, and if you attended any of the events, there was lots to see and learn.

The First meeting of the year for Clubhouse Quilts led by our Laura.. was well attended at the afternoon session. 16 anxious sewist were ready to begin the instructions for "Amaretto Cottage". There is also an evening Clubhouse Quilt meeting.
Laura showed everyone a new technique for creating perfect 1/2 square triangles. As always.. her instruction were clear and precise.
Of course when attending "Clubhouse Quilts" there is always a bit more in the way of learning and fun.
When attending this club you get more than project instructions..

There is always show and tell.. This month Vicky and Phyllis provided some fantastic eye candy.. when they showed their Thimble Berries quilts.. beautifully quilted. Carla.. showed the completed Clubhouse quilt from last year. and there were more.

New Poke A Dots.. There are several brands of these types of thimbles. Sticky leather fits on your "needle push finger" and you don't even know it's there, except there is no pain to your finger when doing hand sewing. This brand.. now in stock, seems thinner. A tighter skin fit maybe.

We love the red color. Each thimble dot.. will last a long time. When you are finished with a hand sewing session, simply place your "dot" on top of the metal can. It will be sticky and ready to use the next time you need it.

If you have trouble sewing with a thimble.. you should give these type of sticky thimbles a chance.. we're sure you will love hand sewing again.

Hang ‘Em Small

Everyone hates to sew sleeves on quilt. For smaller projects, it is no longer necessary! Check this out….
Cut four – 5″ squares.

Fold them in half on the diagonal and press – wrong sides together.

Place these four triangles in each corner of the quilt before attaching the binding. The raw edges on the straight sides will be caught in the seam allowance when the binding is attached!

I like to use screen molding to hang my quilts. It is a thin piece of wood with curved sides. If you are an old farm girl like me, it was nailed into the farmhouse screen doors to hold the screening in place. I am dating myself now – because that was when screen was metal! It is cheap, thin, and can be cut with an exacto knife – no power tools required!

Drill a hole in the center of one piece of wood for hanging.

If you place a piece of wood at the top and bottom of the quilt, the two pieces of wood work as stretcher bars. Cut two pieces of wood the width of the quilt – from inside binding to inside binding.

Now wasn’t THAT easy!!!
So I started nesting…..
I wanted to hang something in my sewing room but it was an odd size so it was going to be expensive to cut a mat – and they didn’t have the color of mat I wanted anyway, sooo……
I got in my scrap bin and found a tone on tone that matched perfectly and used a glue stick to attach it to the cheap backing of the frame. …..

Then I centered the item on the fabric and it came out great! The dark blue is the fabric! And it was free! Just a note….the picture is straight – but the picture of the picture isn’t!

Since I was on a roll, I decided to hang a queen size quilt above my couch! I had dreaded this project because the quilt is 99″ square – and I wanted to hang it above a couch under a vaulted ceiling! This time I used one of the “Hang It Dang It” hangers this item is a special order from Heyde's and also in king size!

This quilt is hung using ONE nail! The magnet in the center of the rod supports and centers the quilt so it hangs perfectly straight! Simply brilliant! These hangers come in three different sizes.

This feature will be a Thursday Event on our 2012 Blog. There are so many books on the turn styles, plus on the wall by the batiks.. that it is hard to check out what's new in books on every visit into the store. So we are going to take a look inside a book every Thursday and help you decide whether it's one you would like to add to your sewing library.

How many times have you been in the midst of a project – and spilled a drink all over your work surface? I have done it so often, that I now cover my tables with quilts! Not only are they pretty tablecloths, they are also very absorbent! I learned this trick when the kids were small – spilled milk? No problem! The kids just picked up their plates, I pulled off the quilt and threw it in the washer – problem solved!

While I still cover my work surface with quilts, I cover that quilt with fabric, paper-piecing foundations, templates, etc. – and have ruined them more than once when I got careless.

That is why I love this gadget:

This product clips to the edge of any table with a lip up to 1 1/4″ – and holds a standard water bottle or pop can.

Don’t you just love it? It comes in three colors – sorry you don’t get to choose – but at this price, can you afford to just buy one???

I’ll “Chalk the Line”

It’s about time that women reverse the trend! How often have you found your quilting tools in the garage??? Unless that is where your sewing machine resides, this is a problem! Enter Sue Pelland. She turned the tables – and realized that an old fashioned chalk line would be just the ticket for so many quilting projects.

But, leave it to a woman to improve a classic! Sue changed the shape of the tool so it would fit comfortably in the palm of a woman’s hand. She increased the thickness of the string so it would hold more chalk. (This simple improvement means that you can snap the string up to 15 times before rewinding.) And, she added a rubber stopper so the chalk stays in the container – neat and clean!
The string extends to 30 feet – long enough to snap a chalk line on even the largest quilt, bedskirt, or curtains. Lets face it, the maximum length of a ruler is 36″ – and sometimes that is not long enough to do the job. Now, marking cross hatching on a king size quilt is a breeze! Placing the appliques on a full size quilt? No problem! And while it works great for those big jobs, it works for small ones as well. Machine (and hand) quilters will love it!
A bottle of white, iron-off chalk is included. Refills are available.

You may want to buy two – one for brush off chalk, one for iron-on. A quilter’s motto: Be prepared with the best tool for the job!

But how about if you see for yourself? This is the current version:

Large Numbers
The members of the design team range in age from 40 – 65. EVERYONE had to be able to read the markings – without reading glasses. The size of the Item Number was also enlarged

Gripper Strips
The Creative Grids Basic Range rulers have grip all around the outside edge of the ruler – and they are AMAZING – so we added it to the new version of the squares and rectangles. Two adjoining sides have dashed 1/4″ lines and 1/4″ grip. The other two sides feature 1/2″ grip, which accentuates the patented Turn-A-Round feature.

Numbering System
All whole numbers are black – printed on a white background. When you turn the ruler around to use the 1/2″ markings, the numbers are white – printed on a black background (and they are right side up).
White Centering Lines
There is a white horizontal and vertical line on each ruler so the center is showcased. This feature makes it easy to fussy cut squares and rectangles. Wait until you need to trim an applique block or want to fussy cut a stripe for a sashing – it is simply amazing!

It is called " Love be a Lady " and is based on the classic Lady of the Lake block. The finished quilt is 87 x 87 inches. Please remember the color renditions are simply samples and your quilt can be constructed in your color palette.

The central block in this months wall quilt "Sweethearts Forever" features an original redwork pattern from the 1890s surrounded by colorful borders and Schoolgirl’s Puzzle blocks.The size when completed is 36 x 36 inches. Remember you get complete instructions and cutting guides for each quilt.

Edyta Sitar -- More About a Piecework Designer.

Do you ever want to know a bit more about the background of a quilt designer? or--- do we just look at a pattern and say "that's the quilt I want to make".

We have the latest book coming in.. from Edyta Sitar. She lives in Michigan and offers classes and lectures through out the midwest. There were several things that caught out attention in her latest book.. and we though we might see what else she has written or spoke about.. that might interest Heyde customers..

So here goes..

We found a video of her on the Quilt Show which is playing for FREE until the end of the month.. Here is the web address. The show runs about 1 hour.. but you can watch only the segments with Edyta in if you would like. This video is only FREE for the next few days. We personally loved the segment on scrappy strip exchanges.. and her tips on perfect triangles. She also talks about anchor colors which perfects a scrappy quilt.

In our search for knowledge about Edyta.. we found a very cute video segment about a tote she designed. We are sharing the video and the instructions to create this very quaint and amusing tote.

Embroidery Club Project November

Let's make a project.. A Personalized Magnetic Note Paper Hanger..
You need.. Your November FREE Embroidery Club Folder.
Embroidery Machine
Scraps of Fabric
Scrap of Stabilizer.
A small notebook.. that flips from the top.

A Personalized Magnetic Note Paper Hanger..

Place heavy cut away stabilizer in the 4 x 4 hoop and sew session 1 for the fabric placement stitch

Lay fabric over the placement stitch and sew the tack down session.

Next, sew the Monogram..

The next session is the fabric tack down stitch for the back of your note pad holder. Remove the hoop from the machine. Apply stick glue to the corners of the fabric back.

Attach to the cut-away stabilizer on the back side of the hoop. ( The sewing lines will help you determine placement.

Place the hoop back in the machine and stitch out the next session, which is the surround satin stitich.

Next open the slots.. with a very thin sharp scissors.

The carefully trim around the edge, making sure not to cut into the satin stitches.

Attach a magnet to the back of the holder using a fabric glue. We used Fabric Tac.

Now it time to place a tablet into the holder.. These tablets are found at drugs stores, office supplies and some dollar stores.

The back and front of the tablet slide into the two slots..

And your Personalized List Holder is ready to hang.. where you can find it.. There are PES files in the November Folder for the entire alphabet.. and also a plain one which you can add your own creative touches.

These are quick to make.. welcome little gifts to hand out.
Quick to sew.. they would make unique tags for gift boxes.. just write the recipients name on the first page of the tablet.. and you have two presents.

The sewing days are simply flying by.. Demo Day was very informative yesterday as new products and some old were shown. For those who did not get to attend Demo Day.. here is a little insight !

This is not New.. but soooo very interesting ! Do you remember the Prairie Points Ruler that created those little "points" lighting fast? Well that same quick thinker... has designed a ruler that makes a scalloped edge in the same manner.

Demo Day Wednesday

It's a casual show and tell sort of day.. at the store. We will have a few demos, and an area of New Products just in from the Quilt Market Buying Trip..
We also invite you to pick up the NOVEMBER RED QUILT Promotion folder. Just bring in your stick and while you are viewing a demo or two.. we will put the RED Quilt Projects on your Drive FREE .. It's another Heyde customer appreciation project .

There are 2 Quilt Patterns in the November Folder as usual, and they both feature a 12 to 12 1/2 center.. so in order to remodel the quilts for the holiday season.. we chose a center from a holiday panel and fussy cut the center as a starting point.

One of the quilts features foundation blocks.. Of course there is a pattern for doing the foundation piecing manually... but we have also digitized the pattern for your embroidery machine in two sizes.

Also in your folder you will find two embroidery patterns.. one is the word Believe which is sewn in applique. The other is a snowflake which you can use to embellish many winter projects.

We have used Angelina.. as our fabric of choice for these projects.. If you have not used Angelina.. stay tuned to tomorrows blog for some fun and informative information on this product which is now in stock.

Sew for Fun is a promotion hosted by Brother. and was led by Carol Bell a Brother instructor.
Everyone there gets a hands on.. experience with the Quattro D. There is learning, smiles, amazing feats that the Quattro can do, more smiles, lunch, projects to take home, more smiles..

It's Brother Club Day for November.... Always and fun and informational FREE monthly Club led by Karen. Meetings are at 2:00 PM and 5:15 PM.

You will be introduced to some of the newest arrivals in the store since market.. you won't want to miss the latest Amy Bradley designs. Here are a few examples. For instance the wall hanging (24x24).. 1 Little 2 Little 3 Little Quilters.. created using fusable applique and the blanket stitch.
